From Can Sastre hotel in the stunning town of Ciutadella to one of my favourite hotels of all time Menorca Experimental near Son Bou, Menorca really does have its fair share of flawless boutique properties to choose from. But when I returned to the dreamy island for the second time I was on a mission to hunt out Menorca's most beautiful beaches and the best tapas in Menorca so based myself in the capital, the pretty port town of Mahon. The port area has a real buzz during the evenings when the surrounding restaurants are a buzz with locals and holidaymakers alike looking for good food and icy drinks to while away the balmy nights. Not far from Mahon, I also find the Natural Park of Albufera des Grau, where long walks, hidden beaches the beautiful Far de Favàritz lighthouse await.

What’s the vibe at Can Alberti?
Can Alberti (previously known as Casa Alberti) is a true haven. Built in 1740, you’ll immediately notice the hotel’s peach facade, standing proud amongst the pastel-fronted houses of Calle Isabel, in the centre of Mahon's historic quarter. Once inside the building, the heat of the day is left behind and a relaxed atmosphere takes over, Can Alberti is a spacious hotel with sweeping staircase, beautiful works of art and a stunning chandelier, there are also lots of communal spaces to relax and unwind and that's before you even get to your room.

During the hottest summer months of the year, Can Alberti is usually full to capacity and the town of Mahon swarming with tourists from all over the world. Yet for my stay, in July 2020, only six of the hotel's 15 rooms were occupied due to the pandemic and lack of global travel (it was legal to travel during this period but tourists seemed too wary to risk it). But rather than hinder my trip, the quietness of the town enhanced it as my friend and I had practically the whole hotel to ourselves. The staff and service was incredible and I was able to eat in some of Mahon’s best restaurants without making a reservation.
How are the rooms at Can Alberti?
Of the 15 rooms, all seem to have a varied and unique feel. My pretty room, number seven, was on the top floor with a bathroom that had the real wow factor (much like The Ned in London). Bigger than the actual bedroom, it held a stand-alone bathtub, shower big enough for two and vanity area with a long oval mirror all hidden under a sloped ceiling with exposed wooden beams.

The bedroom had a south-facing window which let in the afternoon sun creating dappled shadows across the bed and walls, there was a desk area, low armchair and two round bedside tables each holding modern reading lamps. The décor was very simple using a colour palette of whites and grey with a tiny touch of burnt orange throughout the pillows and on curtains.
My bedroom (number seven) |
There are seven other rooms of a similar size to mine, as well as larger ‘patio’ and ‘family’ rooms and a handful of suites. My friend's room, one floor below, faced out onto the street below yet said her room was peacefully quiet with the comfiest of beds.
What is there to eat and drink?
I booked the B&B rate so had breakfast included with my stay. Served each morning on the patio, by pretty olive trees, Can Alberti’s selection impressed me with local cheeses, jamon, sweet Menorcan cake, incredible artisan yogurt made by Lluriach and the usual pastries, fruits and juice typical throughout the island.
Breakfast at Can Alberti |
There’s no restaurant at Can Alberti but some of the best tapas in Menorca can be found just a short stroll away—I loved Anna & Pepe, Asorbos and El Rosario de la Aurora. In the lounge area of the hotel, I found an honesty bar, that is perfect for a nightcap or afternoon glass of wine before dinner.
Any highlights?
Can Alberti made my time in Mahon so enjoyable, I loved everything this boutique hotel has to offer, from the location, right in the centre of the old town to the outdoor patio area that is the perfect setting for breakfast or an evening espresso. The breakfast was delightful, especially the yogurt(!) and the seating areas (which I didn’t end up using) were well decorated and would have been nice to lounge in had I stayed any longer. The hotel is also dog-friendly, with some rooms offering patios. Parking in Mahon can be hard to come by and Can Alberti lacks parking spaces due to its location but this didn't prove problematic as we ended up leaving our car on roadsides around town or in one of the free-parking lots around a 12-minute walk from the hotel.
Anything they could improve on?
There's not a lot of places to park but that's not really the fault of the hotel.
