Situated on the bohemian and super relaxed Stock Island, just six miles from the historical centre of Key West is Ocean’s Edge, a four-star hotel with its very own marina. Surrounded by tropical gardens and palm trees the hotel grounds cover an impressive 20 acres and include six beautiful swimming pools. The location provides a quiet, relaxing retreat, well away from the hustle and busy streets of Key West itself.

What’s the vibe at Oceans Edge Resort & Marina?

Ocean’s Edge has a ‘Martini-in-hand’ kind of vibe—sophisticated, smooth and totally carefree. The whole place feels very spacious and relaxed, and when I stayed there didn’t seem to be many other people around which added to the calm vibe. As the hotel is about a 15-minute drive to Key West it’s handy to have a car (especially if you plan on visiting the best seafood restaurants in Florida Keys) but the hotel does provide an hourly, free shuttle bus to Key West which is handy and easy to navigate should you be without wheels.

How are the rooms Oceans Edge Resort & Marina?

Really spacious! I was impressed with the size and brightness of my ocean view balcony king suite, the room had a reception area, kitchenette, lounge, huge bedroom, balcony with chairs and table and large bathroom. Decorated throughout in a deep blue and white palette, there were bright palm-print cushions, old-style maps of Key West on the wall, books by Hemingway (including some he wrote in Cuba) and a writing desk. The wooden balcony had sweeping views out to the ocean and provided the perfect place to start the morning with a cup of coffee.

What is there to eat and drink?

I ate breakfast outside each morning from the Yellowfin Bar & Kitchen, they serve all the usual coffee and breakfast options such as waffles, fruit plates and smoked salmon bagels as well as offering cocktails throughout the day plus lunch and dinner options. For lunch and dinner I made the most of Key West's impressive restaurant scene, but the hotel has an extensive menu too, serving up everything from poke bowls and crab wontons to blackened grouper and beef short ribs. There’s also the Oceans Edge CafĂ© that serves snacks and drinks throughout the day.

Any highlights?

I really loved my room. Although not decorated to my personal taste it was so bright, spotlessly clean and very relaxing. The six swimming pools are also a real highlight, I went down for a swim each morning before breakfast and mostly had the pool to myself. The hotel offers many complementary activities that unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to try out, but if you do have time, there's paddleboarding, kayaking and cycling available. The hotel can also help with booking trips out to the incredible Dry Tortugas National Park, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which I’d highly recommend

Anything they could improve on?

Nothing that springs to mind, although it is worth noting that Oceans Edge Resort & Marina is quite tricky to visit without a car.
