As Sri Lanka’s second-largest National Park, I’ve been lucky enough to visit Yala many times over the past few years, for both work and pleasure. And every adventure into this wild and rugged part of Sri Lanka varies greatly depending on the month, time of day, and where I’m staying for the night. While I’m yet to try the bungalows situated inside the actual park grounds, I've tried most of the accommodation options within the buffer zone in the hopes of finding the very best hotels in Yala.

Some of my favourite stays have taken place during what would be considered terrible safari conditions, with lots of wind and rain, but one of my best ever leopard sightings was while the park was grey, gloomy and saturated with rain. The leopard sauntered right past our jeep, stopped mere meters away and sat there silently before yawning, and finally strolling back into the thicket. On other occasions I’ve seen wonderful birds such as pied kingfishers and black-hooded orioles flitting between the undergrowth, and sometimes the views remind me of the natural world’s darker side: a snake being attacked by an eagle and a deer being pulled into the lake by a crocodile. Yet, what unites all of my great game drive experiences is a wonderful place to rest at the end of the day. Here’s my carefully selected edit of the absolute best hotels in Yala, Sri Lanka.
The best hotels in Yala, Sri Lanka
1. Wild Coast Tented Lodge
Not only one of the best hotels in Yala, but one of the best boutique hotels in Sri Lanka, Wild Coast Tented Lodge wows on all levels. From its sublime architectural design, which puts nature front and center stage (not too unlike some of the island's stunning Geoffrey Bawa hotels), and the expert safaris led by some of the country's leading naturalists included in room rates, to the photogenic bedrooms with standalone deep soak bathtubs and the restaurant’s delightful menu, this hotel is a solid 10/10.

Set between the golden dunes and dense coastal wilderness of Sri Lanka’s southeast, I’ve stayed at the hotel twice now, and each time I’ve been blown away on all accounts; there’s just something so deeply magical about this place. Sitting at the higher end in terms of pricing, if you’re only coming to Sri Lanka once in your lifetime, this is undoubtedly a top spot to book.

2. The Warden’s House
The Warden’s House is one of my absolute favourite Yala-adjacent properties since it only features four bedrooms and sits in a completely different area from the other properties listed, instead whisking guests into the lesser-visited Block 5 of the park. Situated close to the holy pilgrimage town of Kataragama, which is also well worth a visit, the property is surrounded by wild, untamed nature with the Menik River sitting just beyond the boundary, making it one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful hotels.

Stays are typically all-inclusive, with one game drive included. Having stayed twice now, I’ve seen leopards on both of the safaris I’ve taken with The Warden’s House, and both sightings have been incredible, with no other jeeps nearby. The food and drink options are all outstanding, and bedrooms are filled with intriguing books, four-poster beds, and black-and-white wildlife prints.

3. Hilton Yala
To be honest, I’m not a big fan of global chains, so I arrived at Hilton Yala unsure whether the brand known for its city hotels could deliver an authentic safari experience, but that changed quickly when I saw the architecture and my stunning suite with a private plunge pool.

During a game drive into Yala National Park, guided by Sajith, an exceptionally knowledgeable ranger, I encountered a sloth bear, a Russell’s viper, and an unforgettable leopard sighting during my two-night stay in November 2025. Beyond the wildlife, the resort impressed me with its jungle setting, attentive service, and inventive local cuisine that's on par with Colombo's top restaurants, making it one of the most memorable safari stays I’ve experienced in Sri Lanka.
4. Jetwing Yala
With 80 bedrooms, Jetwing Yala is one of the larger hotels in the area, not too far from the entrance gate to Yala Block 1. I’ve had the chance to stay twice now, both times taking a safari with outsourced drivers and guides since safaris are not included in room rates. Sitting at the mid-range level, bedrooms are large for the price point and have balconies, some with sea views.

Dining is a buffet-style affair, which I’m not always a fan of, but the food here is always decent, with a large selection of both Sri Lankan and Asian dishes, and the best buffalo curd, which is made locally from the milk of the roaming buffaloes you might see while out exploring. As the hotel sits within the national park’s buffer zone, wild animals can stroll directly onto the hotel’s grounds, with elephants having been known to wander right into the hotel reception on occasion. Jetwing’s expansive swimming pool is one of the highlights, while the staff are always super friendly and knowledgeable.
5. Uga Chena Huts
Uga Chena Huts offers an immersive safari escape on the edge of Yala National Park with 18 secluded cabins that combine rustic character with understated luxury, featuring private plunge pools, spacious sun decks, and open-air showers.

Natural textures, earthy shades, and tactile fabrics complement the surrounding landscape, while the resort’s central pool and thoughtfully priced spa treatments provide welcome respite after a day in the wild. Of all the Yala properties listed in my roundup, this is the only one I’ve not yet returned to, but I’m hopeful that will change since I remember the food and drinks offering being extremely delightful.
