11 best cafes in Colombo—chosen after two-and-a-half-years of research
1. Radicle Specialty Coffee
I can’t get enough of this spacious specialty coffee shop and art gallery in the Fort area of Colombo. Not only is it housed in one of the city’s most iconic structures, the De Mel building, which hosted Duran Duran’s music video for Hungry Like the Wolf, back in 1982, it also hosts captivating art exhibitions from some of Sri Lanka’s most exciting artists and serves some of the best coffee and matcha on the island.

Having visited many, many times since Radicle opened in mid-2025, I’ve sampled much of the menu—from the dreamy egg sando and Ceylon fried chicken to the gorgeous matcha and coffee variations. I love the espresso tonic, coconut hibiscus matcha foam, and their flat white, all worth sampling when in the city.
Opening hours: 7am to 6pm
Address: Radicle Specialty Coffee, De Mel Building, Colombo 1
2. Kiri Kopi
There are two Kiri Kopi cafes in Colombo, with the latest having just opened at the very top of Park Street Mews at the very end of September. The newest space has already become my favourite outpost with its paired back industrial aesthetic, gorgeous custom artwork hanging above the modbar espresso machine, slick silver counter, on-site bakery and kitchen, and wonderful staff.

It feels unlike any other cafe in the city and will eventually serve dinner and drinks with bakery-inspired cocktails, an intriguing possibility. Still in its infancy, it’s already proving popular with locals and tourists thanks to its extensive menu that lists freshly baked croissants, BOP tea from Nuwara Eliya, incredible coffee, almond twists, cookies, cakes, and standout sandwiches.
Opening hours: 7.30am to 5pm
Address: Kiri Kopi, Park Street Mews, 50 Park Street, Colombo 2
3. SEED
Having just unveiled an incredible refurbishment that’s seen this Colombo coffee shop utterly transformed, SEED sits high within Colombo’s coffee and matcha scene with expert-sourced beans and ceremonial-grade tea.

| SEED cafe in Colombo 7 |
Not too far from De Saram House, one of the most impressive Geoffrey Bawa hotels on the island, Seed has a menu with a little bit of everything; I love the golden folded eggs with goat cheese and truffle oil as well as the granola and all the coffee variations on offer, from flat white to balanced Americanos. Once breakfast, brunch or lunch is over, be sure to check out the Design Collective housed within the same building, selling clothing, accessories and jewellery from some of Sri Lanka’s hottest designers. Opening hours: 7am to 7pm
Address: 60 Horton Place, Colombo 7
4. The ‘Stache
Having visited time and time again, thanks in part to the dish called Siam Ceylon, another top Colombo cafe that I just can’t get enough of is The 'Stache.

My fave dish, a take on the classic Sri Lankan dish, kiribath, is served with a chicken curry inspired by the flavours of Thailand, topped with bacon bits and onions, and it’s hands down one of the best dishes in the entire country. The rest of the menu is eclectic, with something for everyone. I also especially like the toasted pol sambol, date chutney and cream cheese roast paan sandwich, the kaya toast and the tinkiri tea.
Opening hours: 9am to 5pm, closed Mondays
Address: The ‘Stache, 20 De Fonseka Road, Colombo 5
5. Grind
As the closest cafe to my apartment and not too far from one of the most beautiful hotels in Sri Lanka, Maniumpathy, Grind is all too easy to stop by, but that’s not the reason it’s one of my all-time favourites. Grind also serves really incredible coffee, boasts wonderful staff headed up by brilliant head barista Nuwan Samaravickrama, and has a delightful range of sweet treats, from healthy date and almond energy balls to matcha cookies and moist homemade banana bread. With its unfussy aesthetic, it also reminds me of some of my favourite coffee shops in Mexico City.

The food menu is pretty varied too, and I always forget that they are open until 10pm, making Grind a great option if you want a decent coffee after usual coffee shop opening hours.
Opening hours: 7am to 10pm
Address: Grind, Access Towers 2, Colombo 2
6. Department of Coffee
This airy upstairs lounge is the ideal place to escape Colombo’s heat, and with a brew bar using numerous brewing methods from Kalita Wave and Aeropress to Belgian Syphon and V60, chances are coffee aficionados, like me, will feel quite at home.
 |
| Department of Coffee |
With a clientele that ranges from orange-robed monks and dating couples to solo-ers, the odd foreigner, and people conducting business meetings, Department of Coffee makes everyone feel welcome. The avocado toast is also very good, and it’s possible to buy freshly roasted beans here if you like to brew your own coffee at home.
Opening hours: 7am to 11pm
Address: Department of Coffee, 10A Philip Gunawardena Mawatha, Colombo 7
7. Kaiko’s Cafe
Not far from some of the best boutique hotels in Sri Lanka, refreshing Kaiko’s sits away from the overused aesthetic found in cafes all over the world these days, with its one-of-a-kind interiors that see movie posters, old local newspaper articles, and books grace its walls.

The coffee is delicious; the yaara tea is even better and well worth trying, and the food menu lists lots of Sri Lankan favourites like pittu, ghee yellow rice with chicken curry, and kottu, as well as a few Western dishes.Opening hours: 9.30am to 10.30pm
Address: Kaiko’s Cafe, 22 B84, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia
8. Oh My Cake!
I actually think this place makes some of the best cakes in the city, serving unique flavours, well-sized portions, and an amazing Basque cheesecake. Hidden away on Stratford Avenue, it’s easy to miss this peaceful sanctuary, but be sure to add it to your itinerary when visiting Colombo 6, especially if delights like hazelnut mousse cake, lemonberry and carrot cake sound tempting.

9. Wide Eyes Coffee
I’m typically not a big fan of malls or shopping centres, and rarely recommend heading into a shopping centre to eat or drink, but having recently renovated and expanded the upstairs dining area of Colombo City Centre (CCC), this refurbished space now holds a few eating and drinking gems, of which Wide Eyes is one of them.

The cinnamon buns are out of this world good; the devilled sausage pastry puffs are so moreish, and the masala chai and matcha blends are pretty decent too. The atmosphere, thanks to its mall setting, is occasionally a little chaotic, but I highly rate this place if you’re in the area and want to take a break.Opening hours: 10am to 10pm
Address: Wide Eyes Coffee, Colombo City Centre, 3rd Floor, 137 Sir James Pieris Mawatha, Colombo 2
10. Barefoot Garden Cafe
Barefoot Garden Cafe is one of Colombo’s longstanding cafes and triples up as a gallery and handicrafts store, making it a must-visit stop on most tourists' itineraries while in the capital. I mostly go here to pick up Sri Lankan-authored books or to see the latest exhibition, typically grabbing lunch or a drink while I’m at it.

Address: Barefoot Garden Cafe, 704 Galle Rd, Colombo 3
11. KIKU Colombo
This bright and airy space, hidden away on the second floor in Colombo 5, serves really great matcha, coffee, and roasted beans to take home alongside some delicious sweet treats like banana, chocolate, and espresso muffins and twice-baked pastries.
