Where to eat and drink in Barbados—7 amazing places you have to try, from low-key beach bars to high-end restaurants

If you’re lucky enough to be heading to the beautiful island of Barbados or have in fact chosen the island as the dreamiest remote working destination, prepare yourself for a real treat. As well as incredibly beautiful beaches in Barbados there’s also an abundance of amazing places to eat and drink. From the high-end, luxury options of the west coast to beachside fish shacks down on the south side, there’s something delicious for everyone to enjoy. Here are my favourites...

1. NORTHERN BARBADOS: CATCH 22, SUNSET POINT, ST LUCY

Right up on the top of the island, chances are you’ll have Catch 22 all to yourself. Take a table outside on the cliff top, overlooking the ocean and order any of the fresh fish dishes. I had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and tried my first ever fish cutter, a delicious Bajan sandwich with fried fish fillets, alongside sweet potato fries. The lion fish is also very good here and for dessert you can get bread pudding, another typical dish from Barbados. The setting is pretty unbeatable and prices are reasonable too.

2. NORTH-WEST BARBADOS: THE FISH POT, ST PETER

This was one of my favourite meals from the time I spent in Barbados, and its here that you can see some of the best sunsets on the island. My friend and I had a glass of wine on the veranda, before sitting down to dinner inside the restaurant. I went for the half grilled Caribbean lobster with roasted pepper and cilantro butter and a side of root mash with coconut and lemon grass, while my friend opted for the sautéed tiger shrimp with a black bean and soy glaze, both were totally amazing, especially the lobster dish. Afterwards we shared the cheese selection and the breadfruit cheesecake which turned out to be the better of the two options. Breadfruit trees are abundant in Barbados, so you’ll often see the large bright green fruits hanging from huge trees wherever you go, but especially so in the north of the island.

3. NORTH-WEST BARBADOS: SEA SHED, MULLINS

I didn’t actually eat at the Sea Shed but had a few drinks here a couple of times. There are tables inside the restaurant and some benches on the pristine stretch of sand that makes up Mullins beach. The Sea Shed is relatively new but has a great vibe and friendly staff, head over for afternoon cocktails, I’d recommend the Rum Punch or the Star Fish.

4. ALL OVER THE ISLAND: CHEFETTE

After a hot day on the beach, do you ever crave something a bit naughty, but totally delicious? This is a real random addition to my restaurant top spots in Barbados but fast-food chain Chefette is a Bajan institution. There’s 15 branches to choose from across Barbados and it's the place to come for a fast, easy, delicious and cheap meal. I had the two-piece chicken box with a side of coleslaw and it’s one of the best fast food restaurants I’ve been to, I’d rate it over American chains hands down.

5. SOUTH-EAST BARBADOS: THE GROVE BEACH BAR & GRILL, CRANE BEACH, ST PHILIP

Tucked behind Crane Beach, amongst coconut trees is another fab place that mixes up ice-cold cocktails in a secluded spot. The Grove Beach Bar & Grill is the perfect place to escape the midday sun with a cool wine, Bajan Monkey cocktail or blended daiquiri. They also do a beach BBQ on Tuesday and Saturday evenings.

6. SOUTHERN BARBADOS: OISTINS FISH FRY, OISTINS, CHRIST CHURCH

Pretty much a Barbados institution, everyone knows Oistins is the place to be on a Friday night. With a huge mix of stalls selling all kinds of fish and seafood, I headed to Annie’s to try some grilled Mahi Mahi served with rice and peas and macaroni pie. Grab a banks beer to accompany your food, sit on one of the communal picnic benches and relax to the sound of people playing dominos nearby.

7. SOUTHERN BARBADOS: CARIB BEACH BAR, WORTHING, CHRIST CHURCH

This unassuming spot on a beautiful stretch of sand is perfect for a laid-back lunch or reasonably priced dinner in the evening. The cocktails are strong, the owners are cool and the creole fish pie is a real winner, it’s no-frills with plastic chairs and tables but that adds to the charm.
